Homosexuality and Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself

It has been said that those who follow God must love and accept the lifestyle of those who practice homosexuality because if not then we are not loving our neighbor as ourselves, thereby breaking the second greatest commandment as taught by Jesus. This commandment is stated first in the Law of God written here:

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. -Leviticus 19:18 (ESV)

Jesus repeats this as the second greatest commandment here:

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” -Matthew 22:37-39 (ESV)

People mistake this as meaning these are the only two commandments you need to worry about but Jesus does not say that here, what He says is:

“On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”-Matthew 22:40 (ESV)

And in fact they do. This is the division of the ten commandments. Then when all of the other commandments are added in they relate to the ten as well as the two that Jesus lists here. So here is how that works:

Love the LORD your God with all of your heart, soul, and might:

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me. -Exodus 20:3
  2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. -Exodus 20:4
  3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. -Exodus 20:7
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.-Exodus 20:8

You shall love your neighbor as yourself:

  1. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. -Exodus 20:12
  2. You shall not murder. -Exodus 20:13
  3. You shall not commit adultery.-Exodus 20:14
  4. You shall not steal. -Exodus 20:15
  5. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.-Exodus 20:16
  6. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s. -Exodus 20:17

So we can see that four commandments have to do with loving God with all of our hearts, and six commandments have to do with loving our neighbor. These all ‘hang on the first two. Now the rest of the commandments ‘hang’ on these first ten. So by now you may be asking where the sin of homosexuality falls on this list. Quite simply it falls under the commandment not to commit adultery.

The sin of adultery is having sexual relations with a person that is not your spouse. Lust also falls into this category, as Jesus said:

“But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” -Matthew 5:28 (ESV)

So any form of lust is included here because lust is a sin. (This also means that you cannot lust after your wife). God never meant for people to be ‘used’ in this way. Sexuality is a gift of God, given to a husband and wife, so that they might find enjoyment with each other. It is so they can form an unbreakable lifetime bond with each other. When used in the proper way this is exactly what physical intimacy between a husband and a wife does. Any misuse of physical intimacy causes pain and heartache. This is why sex should be reserved for marriage. There is no such thing as homosexual marriage according to God. Marriage is only between a man and a woman as defined in the Bible.

There is a passage in Scripture that points out many of the things you are not to engage in when it comes to sex. That passage is Leviticus 18 in this passage the words “uncover the nakedness of” refers to sexual intimacy. The following is the list of people that a person should not have sex with if they wish to follow God’s instructions:

  1. A close relative. (v. 6)
  2. Father or mother. (v. 7)
  3. Father’s wife, that is anyone your father marries. (v. 8)
  4. Sister, half-sister, whether brought up in the same house or not. (v. 9)
  5. Granddaughter. (v.10)
  6. Step-sister. (v. 11)
  7. Aunt on father or mother’s side. (v. 13)
  8. Uncle’s wife, or your aunt by marriage. (v. 14)
  9. Daughter-in-law. (v. 15)
  10. Sister-in-law. (v. 16)
  11. A woman and her daughter, or her grandchildren. (v. 17)
  12. With a woman and then take her sister as a wife while she is still alive. (v. 18)
  13. During a woman’s period. (v. 19)
  14. Your neighbor’s wife, or adultery (v. 20)
  15. Another man, or homosexuality (v. 22)
  16. Any animal. (v. 23)

This is a pretty extensive list. Enough so that if everybody did this Jerry Springer would have a hard time finding guests for his show. Even so, there are some who would look for other ways to go astray. The point is that a person should not be sexually intimate with any person, animal, or thing. The only sexual partner a person should have is their spouse. That is God’s standard, that standard is included in the pattern of the first marriage. The pattern is of a man leaving his father and his mother and being joined to his wife so that the two become one flesh. You would not then take the body that is joined to your spouse and join it to anything else. That is the biblical standard.

It was for the reasons listed in Leviticus 18 that God drove out the nations that were in the land he was giving to Israel:

“So keep my charge never to practice any of these abominable customs that were practiced before you, and never to make yourselves unclean by them: I am the LORD your God.” -Leviticus 18:30 (ESV)

So the loving thing to do is not to validate any lifestyle that goes against what God is teaching humanity in the Bible. In order to love your neighbor as yourself you should encourage them to follow after the LORD and obey His commandments. This is exactly what Jesus did while He was on the earth. Under no circumstances did he teach anything that would contradict or abrogate anything written in beforehand. He only clarified and affirmed what was written and accepted as God’s truth. That means that if you love your neighbor as yourself you will warn them about trampling God’s Word under foot, and living to please themselves rather than pleasing God. When you encourage your neighbor to obey God’s commandments you have done a good deed.

Obviously, those who do not subscribe to what the Bible teaches are outside of the commandments, and outside of God’s Kingdom. They live by the rules of another master. Either they are their own master, or they are mastered by their lusts and desires, or another god. Such people will have to give an account to the Creator for how they have lived. As for me I would hate to see a person show up before God with the mistaken notion that their homosexual lifestyle had God’s stamp of approval on it when it will lead to their downfall at the time of judgement. And now I will attempt to love my neighbor as myself…

A note to any person who is engaged in an L,G,B, or T lifestyle: I am not saying these things because I am angry with what anyone else does in their private lives. I do not feel threatened that my marriage will be diminished by people who live different lifestyles. I believe what you are doing is hurting you, and will ultimately hurt you worse in the end. Unless you turn from this path you will ultimately be put to shame when you are asked to give an account for your life before God. My beliefs do not require that you change what you think or do. However, my beliefs tell me that in order for me to do what is right I must warn those who will be in danger. I believe you are in danger, whether you do or not. And I believe that to stay silent about what I think would be the cruelest thing I could do to you. So with heartfelt sincerity I would encourage you to put aside the lifestyle that is robbing you of eternal life, and turn to the One who made you so that He can heal you. The Messiah has saved me from a life of sin and He can save you too, and I am so grateful for Him that I want you too to experience the love and the joy that I have. It comes from understanding His Word and living for Him on a daily basis. I do not say these things with any animosity towards you, only a deep concern for your well-being. Please consider these words, and God bless.
