Some would have us believe that Jesus got married while he was here on earth. In fact, there is a fragment that some think is proof of this:
On the fragment there is a cryptic sentence that reads:
“Jesus said to them, ‘My wife …’”
Right under mention of Jesus having a wife, another clause reportedly says, “she will be able to be my disciple.”
While the academics can argue over the who said what, when. Or if people really ever believed Jesus was married to a woman, we have Scripture to show us who the bride of Jesus is.
Just before Jesus ascended into the heavens he said this:
“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” -John 14:2-3
When a Hebrew groom took a wife he would go and build an addition onto his father’s house so that he could take his bride back to live with him. God has many times talked of His people as his bride. Here are a few.
“When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord GOD, and you became mine.” -Ezekiel 16:8
“Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the LORD, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.” -Jeremiah 2:2
So when Jesus tells his disciples that he is going to prepare a place for them they understand that they are part of Israel the bride of God. At that point Jesus is saying that he is betrothed to Israel. Later on we see that this invitation is extended to the nations as well. Any who would call on Jesus as their Messiah are grafted into Israel, because he is the King of Israel who has been given the nations as an inheritance. Since Jesus is betrothed to His people (all who call on His name) He will someday return to them and take them to be with him and we see a wedding taking place in the future:
Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; – Revelation 19:7
So Jesus is married. He is betrothed to His people, and one day there will be a wedding where he is united with His people and they will go live with Him in His Father’s house.
